One of the most inspiring posts I see on my many author forums is when someone takes the time to share their story. Each Friday, I’m going to feature a different indie author to help inspire all of you!

What is your pen name?
I write under Joan Aubele, but my family and friends call me Joanie.
What genre do you write in? Why do you love it?
I write Inspirational Memoirs. I simply adore sharing, and thrive on inspiring others.
How many books have you published?
So far I have the one book published.
What inspired you to become a writer?
Ever since I was in Catholic grade school English class, I enjoyed putting my thoughts to paper. But once I discovered the positive reaction my book was creating, I was hooked!
What is your indie success story?
I’m disabled so have been relying on my husband’s income for over over thirty years. It gave me great pleasure, and a sense of independence, to surprise hubby with a custom, comfy chair for his den! (Good God – I sound like I’m in a fifties T.V show). I love it when he needs cash, and I can now offer mine:) I also must admit, I do get off a bit whenever someone thrilled approaches me to tell me they loved my book!
What are your marketing and advertising strategies? What works for you? What doesn’t?
I pride myself in following up. I make sure I thank them – both publicly and privately for their purchase. I tried a few Facebook ads, but they didn’t seem to increase sales. Word of mouth seems to work the best for me.
What is the best piece of self-publishing advice that you’ve ever received?
I think the best advice was from my editor and friend. I was driving myself crazy worrying about how long it was taking to get the manuscript published, all he delays and hoops we had to jump through. He’d then calmly ease my nerves and simply say, “Relax J, it’ll come, when it comes!”! (I guess patience is not my strong suit.)
Anything else fun or notable that you would like to share about yourself?
I wrote my first book while sitting on a folding chair, hunched over an end table since we were remodeling the house:) I’ve upgraded a bit, and now have my own office. LOL
What are you working on right now?
“Hearts Ablaze” (my second memoir) is currently being edited. My editor is going to kill me for saying this, but I find myself still tweaking it.
