Indie Author Spotlight – Karen Kuhlmann Averitt

One of the most inspiring posts I see on my many author forums is when someone takes the time to share their story. Each Friday, I’m going to feature a different indie author to help inspire all of you!

What is your pen name?

Karen Kuhlmann Averitt

What genre do you write in? Why do you love it?

Memoir. I love it because it allows me to use humor and emotion in order to editorialize while conveying fact.

How many books have you published?

One. “I Don’t Want to Have the Prayer: A Messy Pastor’s Kid Does Her Memory Work.”

What inspired you to become a writer?

My mom was a voracious reader, and my dad, a Lutheran pastor, was a stellar writer and public speaker who spoke several languages. Words were a living thing to both my parents, and they taught me to use them wisely and well.

What is your indie success story?

I wanted to tell the story of my life as a pastor’s kid – the remarkable and the ridiculous. It’s a snarky but tender love letter to my parents and my upbringing. It was published on June 30, 2020. The initial response has been gratifying, but the act of hitting that “publish” button was my moment of success.

What are your marketing and advertising strategies? What works for you? What doesn’t?

Speaking opportunities are huge for me, as is engagement on Facebook. So far, Instagram has not reaped many benefits.

What is the best piece of self-publishing advice that you’ve ever received?

Please yourself, but hire a good proofreader.

Anything else fun or notable that you would like to share about yourself?

I’ve written for a stand-up comic, I’m weirdly talented at fundraising, and being a mom is my favorite thing in the world.

What are you working on right now?

I’m trying to decide on my next book. Maybe I’ll give fiction a try.
