There will be times in the indie author community where a change is made to a platform that we rely in (cough cough Amazon) and everyone start flipping out, talking about the end of days or about the sky falling. Cooler heads typically prevail, and after a few weeks/months people adapt, and all is right with the world.
However this article came my way this week, and this was on the back of the news from Australia. I assure you that this is not a “sky is falling” scenario. Major changes have already happened and will continue happening.
I am in a cover group that was holding a big event, a sale of pre-made covers. Now, while I fully expect to have the Facebook algorithms hide the posts in my personal feed, what I found terrifying was that I was in the group scrolling, and could’t find the posts. Facebook can do whatever they want, but in that moment I was thankful that I had a newsletter list. If Facebook goes away tomorrow, I have the names of a good amount of my readers to reach out to if needed.
Am I saying to flock to the next latest and greatest social media platform? No. What I am saying is that if you haven’t taken the time to set-up an author platform outside of social media. Now is the time to not just start thinking about it, but doing it.
Many e-mail companies start off with a free option until you start to build your list. I highly recommend Mailchimp, but Sendfox, Mailerlite and Active Campaign are also good options. Now is the time to start taking control of your indie author business. If you have friends in the industry, please let them know too. (This also means your editors, formatters and cover designers as well.)
