One of the most inspiring posts I see on my many author forums is when someone takes the time to share their story. Each Friday, I’m going to feature a different indie author to help inspire all of you!
What is your pen name?
Jessica Mallegol-Hansen
What genre do you write in? Why do you love it?
Dark Fantasy, because I like fantasy that doesn’t always have a happy ending and not every variable is know.
How many books have you published?
Three.
What inspired you to become a writer?
I wanted to become a manga artist, but due to my Lyme Disease giving me arthritis, I changed over to traditional book writing. I always loved the expressions and unique stories in Japanese culture. I also like how well researched a lot of their stories are compared to a lot of modern American genres, especially in TV.
What is your indie success story?
Success for me was hearing the surprise in my mother’s voice for the first time ever in my life. She didn’t know what I was thinking or what worlds I was building in my head until she read my first book.
What are your marketing and advertising strategies? What works for you? What doesn’t?
I haven’t found a good strategy for me yet. I had to get a part time job so I can continue to figure it out.

What is the best piece of self-publishing advice that you’ve ever received?
Find alpha readers during the writing process. They can literally make or break my books. I think some scenes are perfect until they get back to me about how confused they were. Then I find myself writing an even better version of that scene.
Anything else fun or notable that you would like to share about yourself?
I studied in Video Game Art, Animation, and Design. I’ve also have had a myriad of different jobs, allowing my books to have more rounded experiences.
What are you working on right now?
My third OverWorld book.
