One of the most inspiring posts I see on my many author forums is when someone takes the time to share their story. Each Friday, I’m going to feature a different indie author to help inspire all of you!

What is your pen name?
Chris Tullbane
What genre do you write in?
Science Fiction Fantasy
How many books have you published?
3 novels, 2 novelettes
What inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve always written poetry, but never got into long-form fiction until I had the (good?) fortune of being laid off one year from my software development job, and the (much better) fortune of being given a nice multi-month severance package. After spending much of that time hiking around San Diego or brushing up on newer programming technologies, I got bored, sat down, and spent a little under two months writing my first novel. My wife and friends seemed to enjoy it, so I’ve kept going.
What is your indie success story?
At this point, success is measured more in terms of positive reviews than piles of cash. I funnel pretty much all my revenue back into the costs of future books (and/or ongoing advertising costs), with whatever’s left over put toward bills or the occasional whisky purchase.
What are your marketing and advertising strategies?
I use NetGalley and one or two other sites for advanced review copies and to hopefully generated some word-of-mouth, pre-launch, while also hyping the book up as much as I can on social media and my author site. Once the book is live, I rely almost exclusively on Amazon ads and the occasional Book Barbarian or similar email blast promotion.
What are you working on right now?
I just released Red Right Hand, the second in my post-apocalyptic superhero series that started with See These Bones. The series follows an orphan with the one superpower nobody wants, necromancy, and his attempts to become a hero anyway. Next, I’ll be working on a novelette in the same universe, then the second in my humorous urban fantasy series
