Turn and face the strange… That’s not something I like doing.
However, I’ve been gifted a bit more time these days to think and organize myself. I’ve been thinking hard about my goals as an author and the direction I want to head.
A little over a year ago, (might actually be two years) I commissioned drawings for my second book, ‘Go Play‘. I knew this was going to be a lengthy process, and at that moment, I didn’t have the time or money to have illustrations completed for the other children’s books I have written. I was kinda at a standstill.
I’m a member of a lot of writing groups and I was always intrigued by the posts of people who wrote novels. I had some time to kill while waiting for my picture book illustrations, so I decided to try my hand at one. Being a writer at heart, I had a few started and tucked away in an old laptop. I never throw away old laptops. I have three now, and I don’t know why.
Anyway, I summarized the plot of the novel ideas I had and posted them in a writing group to see if anything stuck. One idea resonated with quite a few members, and I got to work. A few months, and many edits and revisions later ‘Red Picket Fences‘ was born and I was thrust into the world of self-publishing novels. I have to say, it’s a much, MUCH different world than self-published Children’s books. I was able to build a fan base much faster, I sold more copies with effort, but much less effort than with children’s books. It was intoxicating.
Don’t get me wrong, the few times I got out in front of the children to read my book, it was equally magical and intoxicating. I loved it. However, with two children of my own, a budding author business, and regular life to deal with, I just don’t have the time to get out in front of people all that often. The sad state of affairs is that in order to sell children’s books as a self-published author, it’s best to do it in person.
THEN I finally released ‘Go Play’.
It failed, and it failed hard. I still truly believe it’s a great book, and the illustrations are out of this world. I also think it’s perfect for these times when all we really have to do is slow down and enjoy all of the little things about nature, but even with publishing in e-book format, it didn’t sell. If I’m being honest, I think it sold 7 copies.
Typically, this would crush me. I’d probably give up, but I think I might be getting that thick skin other writers have told me I needed to make it. I was bummed, a little hurt, but I wasn’t crushed. You know what I did? I started feverishly writing book two in my Cozy Mystery Series. I realized that this is where my true passion lies.
Meanwhile, I noticed many of my posts on Nikimorris.com were about the business of self-publishing. I enjoyed writing about that topic because it’s something I’ve fully immersed myself in for several years now.
Therefore, I’m facing the strange. After years of identifying myself as a Children’s Book Author, I’m retiring that aspect of my business.
I’m going to streamline and condense down to one website. NikiMorris.Com will now be about self-publishing. I will have pages within the website pointing towards my various pen names. My children’s books will still be available for sale, but I’m shifting my focus entirely. I made some great connections and writer friends in the children’s publishing world. I had some wonderful experiences and I have no regrets. It’s taught me a lot about self-publishing, and myself. It may take some time to figure out how to fix the website, but it’ll get done.
And now for the big announcement! To kick-off my career as a non-fiction author, I started writing, ‘I Self-Publish My Books: and you can too!’ I’m actually putting the finishing touches on the first draft this week.
If you are at all interested in self-publishing but are overwhelmed by all of the information out there, get this book. It’s a start-up guide that tells you everything you need to know to publish your first book. It streamlines the information for you and walks you through the process step-by-step. Many of my friends and acquaintances have asked me how I got started with self-publishing. I’ve written portions of this book many times over in the form of Facebook messages and e-mails. I thought it was time to get a bit more in-depth and share it with all of you.
I’ll have more information soon! Thank you to all of you for sticking with me. It’s been a wild ride, and there are more adventures to come!
